There's so much more to a great yard than just mowing the lawn.

Yard Care Ideas for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day weekend is a huge milestone in Colorado. For many, it’s the day we start planting new landscape plants, annual flowers and warm season vegetables. With every passing day, it’s less likely we’ll see freezing temperatures until fall. It’s one of my favorite times of year.

If you’re celebrating a mom in your life, how about doing some yard work for her? Here are a few things you could offer:

Take care of the lawn. I know, this option has almost no romance factor up front. But in our house, anything that reduces mom’s workload is the best gift ever. So, if the mom in your life normally takes care of the lawn, consider taking on these chores this spring. In fact, this weekend is a great time to do a sprinkler check-up, mow, fertilize and aerate if you haven’t already. If you have a lawn, these are important tasks even if it’s not part of your Mother’s Day celebration. Here’s an article that can link to you more details.

Plant something her honor. Why not plant a tree, shrub or flower to honor the mom in your life? Maybe even a long-lived peony would fit the bill. Drought tolerant and tough as nails, peonies grace landscapes with their gorgeous flowers for decades.

Once you’ve chosen the perfect tree, shrub or flower, make sure you set it up for success with good planting techniques. Here’s an article to that reviews the the nine steps to successful planting.

Give her something beautiful. Here’s a video of a nice craft you could give to mom- a beautiful pot of pansies. Maybe you could customize the pot by painting it, adding the kids’ handprints or adding delicious box of chocolates on the side. For all of you procrastinators, you can finish this project before Sunday. Potted flowers last much longer than cut flowers, becoming the gift that keeps on giving (especially if you take care of it).

No matter how you celebrate Mother’s Day, enjoy this important weekend in the gardening world. Summer is right around the corner!
