In the world of fancy tools, it’s weird to recommend using your hand as a rake. However, I find that it’s actually my favorite way to clean up matted groundcovers. I made a short video where I cleaned up orange carpet hummingbird trumpet by finger raking. In this case, a garden tool would have been less useful.
I’m still working on spring cleanup in my own yard, so I hope to post a few more plant-specific videos this week.
On another note, the warm spring weather is encouraging homeowners to work in their yards this weekend. It’s still a little early to fertilize your lawn if you fertilized last fall since it’s just starting to green up. However, it’s a great time to core aerate. You might want to check out this article for more information. If you can get your lawn aerated before May 1, your lawn will love you.
If you didn’t fertilize your lawn last fall, you might want to read this article to see if you should fertilize now. You can use this train of reasoning to see if you should fertilize before Mother’s Day.
Also, here’s an post on choosing a lawn fertilizer and how to fertilize your lawn, just in case you need some advice on that subject.
Great to see your posts again, Catherine! Welcome back from the snowy winter. Did a little hand-raking myself today; can’t wait to get planting. Looking forward to your continued help and advice this season!
Hi Luke, it’s great to hear from you! Hope your yard weathered the snow okay. That was quite a dump. Looking forward to your experiences and insights this season.
