Now that spring is here, it’s time to get busy. What do you need to do this month?
1. Finish spring cleanup, if you haven’t already. The time for getting ornamental grasses cut back is NOW. Don’t delay. Learn more about this here.
2. If you have areas of rock mulch or decorative rock and had a weed problem last year, consider applying a weed preventer. I’ve posted an article about that topic here. You’ll want to get it down within the next two weeks. As soon as the weather warms up, the weeds will start to grow.
Take action now to prevent weeds later in the summer.
3. If you have shrubs that need pruning, March is the month to prune them. To learn more about this, you can access the Colorado Master Gardener publications on pruning for in-depth information, but I will also refer you to this video about the difference between thinning and heading cuts. You can also learn how to cut back blue mist spirea and Russian sage.
4. It’s still too early to fertilize your lawn. If you feel like you need to do something, water it instead. It may not need it with all the snow recently, so check the soil before you water.
