There's so much more to a great yard than just mowing the lawn.

Where should I take my yard waste?

Once you start tackling spring cleanup, a secondary problem develops. What should you do with your yard waste? Here are some options for you to consider.

Take it to a local landscape waste recycler. In the Colorado Springs area, homeowners (not professional landscapers) can take their yard waste to Rocky Top Resources on Saturdays from 8-4. They accept the waste for free as long as you bring a donation of non-perishable food items for the local food bank. The nice thing about this option is they turn it into mulch and compost. They’re located at 1755 E. Las Vegas St. (579-9103).

Compost it. I reserve some of my yard waste for my compost pile I build each fall. I only put in trimmings from perennials and ornamental grasses- the finer stuff. I do not add shrub and tree branches since they take too long to break down. I also use alfalfa pellets to bring up the nitrogen content, since straight yard waste doesn’t have enough nitrogen to break down on its own.

Trash it. This is the least desirable option since it ends up in the landfill. However, in some circumstances it may be the only realistic option.
